Dr. Birutė Galdikas together with her student dr.Gary Shapiro in 1986 founded the Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) in order to save the orangutan in the world.
OFI - the main office located in Los Angeles (USA), developed it's international offices in Australia, Indonesia and the United Kingdom.
The cornerstones of these foundations are to save the orangutans, their population and environment they are living at. For that purpose foundations trying get donatons, initiate, develop and work on various projects such as to combat illegal logging in tropical forests, aiming to produce palm oil, thus reducing the orangutan population, because the forest is the refuge of the best living conditions. Also there are organized different scientific study visits, trips to Borneo, Indonesia at the research center leaded by dr. Birutė Galdikas.
